Tyler Chavez: Teaching at the Frontiers of Biotechnology

“Science is hard.”
It’s a message Tyler Chavez repeats often in his Johns Hopkins classrooms – not to discourage students, but to prepare them for the realities of discovery.
As an adjunct faculty member in the MS in Individualized Genomics and Health and MS in Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies programs, Chavez teaches graduate courses in fields advancing so rapidly that much of the material often comes directly from recently published scientific literature. The science is complex. The technologies are evolving in real time, the answers are incomplete, and many of the therapies being studied today may look very different a decade from now.
That uncertainty, Chavez believes, is exactly what makes the work exciting.
“One of the most important things about being a scientist is developing the stamina and willingness to fail over and over again,” he said. “You spend a lot of time troubleshooting failures, but that is where the real learning occurs.”
It is a philosophy Chavez has carried throughout his own career. From a student who once doubted whether science was the right path for him, Chavez became a Johns Hopkins-trained organic chemist, biotechnology executive, and educator who has spent nearly a decade helping students understand some of medicine’s most promising emerging technologies – where scientific breakthroughs, clinical challenges, and commercial realities intersect.
Chavez now laughs at the memory of a high school chemistry teacher in northern California who once suggested that science might not be the right fit for him. He was told he should “perhaps pursue English or history instead.”
“Sometimes you can’t listen to people who tell you what you can or can’t do,” Chavez said. “You never know where the journey is going to take you.”
That journey began unexpectedly in an undergraduate course called Chemistry for Poets, a science class designed for non-science majors at Sonoma State University. Taught by visiting UCLA professor Jon Fukuto, the class explored pharmacology and how drugs work in the body.
“I was hooked,” Chavez recalled. “I wasn’t the highest performer in the class, but it sparked my interest.”
He changed his major to chemistry and joined Fukuto’s research laboratory, studying nitroxyl, a highly reactive molecule with potential applications in cardiovascular medicine. The experience ignited a passion for scientific discovery and ultimately led him to Johns Hopkins, where he earned both a master’s degree and PhD in chemistry.
Five years at Hopkins reinforced a lesson that continues to shape his career today: meaningful scientific progress requires persistence.
That mindset has guided Chavez through a career spanning business development, corporate strategy, and alliance management. He has held leadership roles across the biotechnology industry, helping companies advance therapies from early development towards commercialization. Today, he serves as chief business officer at Bay Area-based Braveheart Bio, where he helps shape corporate strategy and secure resources needed to bring new therapies to patients.
Despite a career spent at the forefront of biotechnology innovation, Chavez never lost his passion for teaching and mentorship.
“I love science, but I also love working at the interface between business and science,” he said. “Teaching gives me a reason to stay current in the fields that excite me. Even if I weren’t teaching, these are things I would be reading about on my own.”
His Regenerative Medicine: Bench to Bedside course examines cell therapy, gene therapy, and tissue engineering, guiding students through the scientific, clinical, regulatory, and commercial considerations that shape emerging treatments.
“It’s a really dynamic field,” Chavez said. “You’re talking about everything from the underlying science to how you develop a therapy, navigate regulatory approval, and eventually bring it to patients.”
His Genomics and Personalized Medicine course explores how advances in genomics and other “omics” technologies are transforming healthcare through increasingly individualized approaches to treatment.
That rapid pace of innovation is both exciting and challenging. While regenerative medicine has produced remarkable breakthroughs, Chavez notes that the field has also experienced cycles of intense enthusiasm followed by periods of skepticism.
“These are first-generation products, and first-generation products always have issues we’re trying to solve,” he said. “There have been setbacks, but I believe the potential is still there for regenerative technologies to become truly game-changing therapies.”
The diversity of students in his courses helps bring these scientific conversations to life. Chavez teaches recent college graduates, healthcare professionals, physicians, attorneys, investors, biotechnology industry veterans, and increasingly, international students, all of whom contribute perspectives that enrich classroom discussions.
“I learn a lot from my students,” he said. “Some are working directly with patients. Others understand the business or legal side of healthcare. Everyone brings a different lens to the conversation.”
Looking back, Chavez never anticipated a career that would combine science, business, and teaching.
“When I started graduate school, I thought I was going to become a professor,” he said. “But I realized that while I loved teaching and mentoring, I also enjoyed the business side of biotechnology. This career lets me have both, to have my cake and eat it too.”
It is also an opportunity to share the curiosity that first drew him into science years ago.
“I hope students take advantage of the incredible expertise that exists across Johns Hopkins,” Chavez said. “At Hopkins, you bring the best of the best around the table, and the students benefit from that. And the students are also the best of the best, so it is quite a mix of great minds. There is so much to learn. I think that’s what these programs are trying to do. “
