Miriam Matthews

At Johns Hopkins, Miriam Matthews serves as a lecturer in the MA in Global Security Studies program. She is a senior behavioral and social scientist at RAND who studies human behavior and its implications for national security, military personnel and readiness, organizations, and public policy.

Her research addresses military readiness and training, workforce and talent management, organizational climate, harmful behavior prevention, and program and policy evaluation. She has also studied Russian and Chinese information operations and approaches to countering malign influence.

Matthews uses quantitative and qualitative methods, including large-scale surveys and administrative personnel data, interviews and focus groups, program evaluation, statistical modeling, and text analysis. Her work integrates evidence across methods to identify practical implications for policymakers and military leaders.

She holds a PhD in social psychology, completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, and has authored or coauthored more than 90 publications.
