Max Levy

At Johns Hopkins, Max G. Levy serves as lecturer in the MA in Science Writing program.

An award-winning independent science journalist, Levy’s stories cover all expanses of science, health, and nature, opting for narratives about our changing environment, the quirks of human health, the beautiful complexities of chemistry – and, when the stars align, all three at once. His work has appeared in Quanta Magazine, Wired, Smithsonian, Technology Review, Vox, The Verge, and elsewhere. Max also writes science stories for children and students in TED-Ed animated videos.

Levy earned a PhD in Chemical & Biological Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research involved designing nanoparticles to kill drug resistant bacteria, and testing them in vitro on clinical strains isolated from real patients. After graduate school, he was an AAAS Mass Media Fellow and regular contributor at Wired Magazine. and then as a regular contributor. In 2024, he co-created an indie science media site and newsletter called Sequencer Magazine.
