Gary B. Keeley

Gary B. Keeley is a recently retired CIA Staff Historian, with broad experience across the U.S. Intelligence Community, at CIA, NSA, and the Departments of Defense and State, both in Washington, D.C. and overseas. Almost all of his intelligence work was classified, but he has published a few unclassified historical articles. As a former practitioner and cleared Historian, Mr. Keeley is well-versed in CIA and NSA operations and culture, and expert in their histories, records, and archives. During his time on the CIA History Staff, Mr. Keeley wrote classified monographs and articles about unique aspects of intelligence, posted hundreds of short classified historical pieces to internal websites, presented briefings to internal and external audiences, and served on the editorial board of Studies in Intelligence. He shared his expertise in classified intelligence archives and records both by training others to find elusive historically-important documents, and by locating obscure records that advanced operations and answered questions posed by managers and senior leaders.

In addition to his years on the CIA History Staff, Mr. Keeley served earlier in his career as a Staff Historian in NSA’s Center for Cryptologic History. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from Brigham Young University. He has taught graduate Intelligence courses at American University and currently teaches at Johns Hopkins University.
