Carlos Hernández-Monagas

At Johns Hopkins, Carlos Hernández-Monagas is a Program Coordinator and senior lecturer for the MA in Museum Studies program.

Hernández-Monagas is a museum professional who specializes in collections management with a focus on risk management. He works as a museum consultant for individual collectors and public and private institutions, helping them care for collections and develop exhibits following best practices and standards in the field.

He has been working in museum-related activities for over twenty-five years in the public and private sectors and his goal is to contribute to the development of a museum culture that values and supports collections and programs for the education and enjoyment of the public and online users.

Previously, Hernández-Monagas worked as a collections manager for the Museum of the History of Ponce before serving as director of the museum. His interest in sharing his passion for history, art, and culture motivated him to start teaching. This led to a position as assistant faculty in the Master of Arts in museum studies program at Southern University in New Orleans and, later, to join the Johns Hopkins University graduate museum studies program. As a lecturer at Johns Hopkins, he won the Excellence in Teaching Award, Museum Studies, for the Academic Year 2013-2014.

As an educator, Hernández-Monagas believes in providing students with the tools to adapt best practices and standards in the field to any type of museum and to any role in order to achieve the museum’s mission.

Among his research interests are the use of technology and sustainability practices in museums.

Hernández-Monagas holds a Master of Arts in museum studies from Syracuse University and a PhD in history of the Americas from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico.
