At Johns Hopkins, Tristan Cabello is the Associate Program Director and a senior lecturer for the Master of Liberal Arts program.

Cabello is a historian of American cultures and politics whose research examines American popular culture, with a focus on the intersection of race, sexuality, and politics.

The recipient of multiple grants and awards, including research fellowships funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Cabello has presented more than 40 papers at international and national academic conferences. He has also given talks at American University, Rutgers University, the City University of New York, and the University of Chicago.

Cabello’s articles, reviews, and essays have appeared in several academic journals and anthologies, such as The Global Encyclopedia of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer History, The International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest, and The Encyclopedia of Blacks in European History and Culture. His work has also appeared in mainstream venues such as The Huffington Post. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the academic journal Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture.

Cabello’s digital exhibit, Queer Bronzeville, won the Outhistory Fellowship. In 2018, he served on the National Park Service Historian’s Committee for the Stonewall National Monument.

Prior to joining The Johns Hopkins University, Cabello was the director of the Department of American Studies at American University. At American University, he also served on the Presidential Council for Diversity and Inclusion, to increase the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty members and students. He previously taught at Bowdoin College, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago.

Born and raised in France, Cabello received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in American studies from the University of Strasbourg, and a PhD in American history from Northwestern University.
