An adjunct professor at Texas A&M’s Bush School of Government and Public Policy, DC Campus, Laurienti teaches African politics, regional affairs, demographics, development, and conflict. He also serves as the Bush School DC’s Africa Coordinator.
Laurienti has spent 25 years as a national security professional, including in senior positions at the Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. State Department, and Department of Defense. Laurienti previously served on the CIA’s Leadership Board and as the CIA’s senior leader in charge of analysis on key regions and topics, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Global Energy and Climate. He is recognized for his deep national security and foreign policy expertise, ability to tackle large problems, and knack for leading people.
A recipient of the CIA Director’s and Mentor of the Year Awards, Laurienti was also the inaugural recipient of the Directorate of Analysis First-Line Supervisor and Second-Line Supervisor of the Year Awards. A graduate of and former Trojan football walk-on at the University of Southern California, he earned his MA and PhD from the University of Denver, Korbel School. He is the author of the book The US Military and Human Rights Promotion, Lessons from Latin America.
