Peggy Ryan
Lecturer
At Johns Hopkins, Peggy Ryan serves as a lecturer in the MA in Communication program where she draws on 20 years of experience as a marketing specialist in the international and U.S.-based performing arts, travel, non-profit, and hospitality sectors. Her marketing work specializes in strategic content creation, focusing on photography and videography, and building data-driven, multi-channel digital marketing campaigns. She is currently a marketing consultant for Folger Shakespeare Library. Before relocating to Washington, D.C., she led the marketing efforts of San Diego’s Diversionary Theatre, the nation’s third-oldest LGTBQIA+ theatre.
Ryan began her marketing career at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. Her professional successes have included developing and executing the digital media strategy from the ground up for San Diego Repertory Theatre, building long-term community relationships that still support special programs and performances at the Old Globe. She built new and diverse audiences and marketed a nearly sold-out season as director of marketing at Chautauqua Theater Company. She developed innovative outreach and digital advertising strategy for San Diego Asian Film Festival and Ojai Playwrights Conference. Ryan also has led or supported the marketing efforts for the Carlsbad Music Festival, San Diego Italian Film Festival, Doctors in Italy, Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts, the University of Bologna’s GIOCA program, and San Diego State’s School of Theatre, Television, and Film, among others.
Ryan earned her graduate degree in Arts Management at Carnegie Mellon University, a second graduate degree in Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts at the University of Bologna, and a certificate in International Education from the Florence University of the Arts. She also received her Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from UC San Diego. She loves teaching and working with students and has taught and developed marketing courses for San Diego State University and the University of Applied Sciences in Kufstein, Austria, as well as served as a teaching assistant at the University of Bologna. She also taught English on-site at Ducati’s headquarters and Italy’s national credit bureau. Ryan worked as a city director based in Florence, Italy, supporting students living and studying abroad for the Center for International Studies Abroad, as well as served as an on-site program coordinator for students and professors traveling through Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.
