At Johns Hopkins, Mladen Petkov is a Program Coordinator and lecturer for the MA in Communication program.

Petkov has several years of newsroom experience in the United States and Bulgaria. He has worked as a news producer for ABC and NBC affiliate television stations and as an associate producer at WTOP news radio station. He was also a United States correspondent for Bulgarian Nation Radio between 2012 and 2023. He is a regular U.S. current affairs contributor on Radio Sofia in Bulgaria.

As an academic, Petkov is interested is journalistic roles and practices, media freedom, disinformation, and Artificial Intelligence. He has taught at Wake Forest University, Forsyth Technical Community College, and the University of Mary Washington. His teaching experience includes media, digital studies, public speaking, persuasion, and disinformation classes.

Petkov earned a doctorate in communication from American University in Washington, D.C., an MA in Communication from Wake Forest University, and an MA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Westminster, London, UK. He earned his BA in Social Work at Sofia University in Sofia, Bulgaria.
