At Johns Hopkins, Jill Underhill is a lecturer in the MA in Communication program and is deeply committed to excellence in graduate education, mentoring students, and fostering a deeper understanding of communication theory, research, and practice.

Throughout her career, Underhill has been dedicated to advancing the study and practice of communication, with a particular interest in interdisciplinary approaches and pedagogical innovation. Her research focuses on communication, stigma, and inclusion in higher education, particularly for autistic students. Her work has explored peer perceptions, stigma management, and inclusive pedagogy in communication courses. Published in the Journal of Autism & Developmental Disorders, Communication Education, and Basic Communication Course Annual, Underhill’s studies examine classroom dynamics, stigma management, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Her research has earned multiple top paper awards from the National Communication Association. Additionally, Underhill frequently presents on neurodiversity, mental health, Universal Design for Learning, and inclusive higher education topics at national and regional conferences.

Underhill earned a PhD in Communication from the University of Maryland in 2012. She previously taught in the JHU MA in Communication program from 2010-2015 and worked as a professor in the Communication Studies Department at Marshall University from 2012-2025, before relocating back to D.C. When not teaching or researching, Dr. Underhill enjoys practicing yoga, reading, and going on hikes with her husband, son, and dog.
