At Johns Hopkins, Jay Carlis is a lecturer for the MS in Energy Policy and Climate program.

Jay Carlis is 20-year renewable energy industry veteran. Jay currently serves as VP, Origination for Pine Gate Renewables. He leads the Origination team in contracting power offtake opportunities and guiding cross-functional teams through the contract negotiation and deal approval process, with special expertise in wholesale RTO/ISO markets. Prior to his work at Pine Gate, Jay was Senior Director of East Origination for AES Clean Energy after serving on the leadership team of Community Energy prior to the acquisition by AES. Jay spent 15 years with Community Energy in executive leadership, renewable energy marketing, PPA origination, solar development and M&A.

Since 2015, Jay has originated and closed over 1 GW of utility-scale solar PPAs with data center customers, universities, municipalities, and utilities. He also led the teams that developed and permitted over 500 MW of utility-scale solar farms. He also negotiated and closed over 500 MW of solar asset sales to long-term owner/operators.

Starting in 2009, Jay ran Community Energy’s marketing business, maintaining commercial REC sales and thousands of residential customers in utility green power programs.

Jay holds an MBA in Marketing and Sustainable Enterprise from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School and a BA in Sociology from Haverford College.
