Peter Saundry is a Senior Fellow at the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), a non-partisan organization of scientists, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers working to improve the scientific basis of environmental decision-making. He served as Executive Director of NCSE from 1993-2015.

Dr. Saundry’s career has focused on the connections between science and technology, public policy and law, and environmental decision-making. He is a recognized expert in energy and climate change. Peter was the lead Editor and Author of The Food-Energy-Water Nexus, published by Springer in 2020.

Peter holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Saundry was a Congressional Science Fellow with the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, where he was a key advisor on science and technology issues related to the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Saundry has led annual reviews of federal investments in environmental and energy R&D programs. He organized and led major conferences on energy, climate change, environment and security, environmental disasters, oceans, and the food-energy-water nexus.

At NCSE, Dr. Saundry spearheaded the establishment of the multi-year National Commission of Science for Sustainable Forestry, the Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program, and other initiatives. He is also a leader in interdisciplinary environmental education. Dr. Saundry is co-founder of the Encyclopedia of Earth – a free online resource on the environment.

Dr. Saundry has been the PI on awards from numerous federal agencies and foundations.
