Congratulations to our current student Leah Spellman who has been working on a book about war brides. Her first article based on interviews with international women who married US soldiers was just published, “Leaving Home for Love” (p. 56)

Some married the ally; some married the enemy. More than 70 years later, World War II war brides reflect on finding love worth leaving home for.

Each war bride’s experience was unique. Some were welcomed while others were vilified. Some marriages stood the test of time while others crumbled. All represent bravery, hope, and resilience. Each year, many war brides gather for an annual re- union to reflect on their shared experiences, see old friends, and remember the love that led them to their new lives in America. Here are some of their stories.
