Inspiring the next generation of Biotechnology professionals is crucial to the growth and success of the industry. The Center for Biotechnology Education (CBE) is committed to introducing this exciting field to children and youth in grades K -12. Working with partners within the Johns Hopkins community as well as in industry, and government, the Center offers hands-on workshops and programs that bring math, engineering and bioscience alive to create a lasting impression.
US Science & Engineering Festival – The annual US Science & Engineering Festival has an attendance rate of nearly 200,000 visitors and is always a great event!
Frontiers in Science and Medicine – The Center for Biotechnology Education took part in a day of hands-on science for seventh-grade students, which is run in partnership with Adventist HealthCare, the Universities at Shady Grove, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ NIH Chemical Genomics Center and more than 15 other organizations and local biotechnology companies. The Montgomery County Public School system selects schools to participate each year.
Additional Outreach Opportunities – The Center for Biotechnology Education takes part in many outreach events each year in the Baltimore and Rockville communities. In the past, we have hosted local girl scout troops, elementary school students, and families, teaching them about the values of science and the biotechnology world. If you are interested in learning more, or would like to schedule your own event, please email us.
The Center for Biotechnology Education has partnered with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Family Academic Programs Science and Technology Series. The Science and Technology Series is inspired by the daily advances in technology that affect our lives in countless ways. In these one-day programs, students and their parents explore aspects of technology and science through hands-on workshops, demonstrations, and lectures led by pioneering scientists, mathematicians, and researchers. Learn more about the event.
The Center was one of the leaders in the development of the “Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day,” which gave 200 middle school students a glimpse of what it’s like to have a career in science and medicine through hands-on science experiments and demonstrations. The CBE expects to continue to partner with companies and organizations in the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center and Baltimore, to offer this program on a regular basis.
In addition, the CBE has developed a program for children in elementary school where they can experience biotechnology hands-on in our lab facility. The students have the opportunity to perform experiments, use a microscope and learn about careers in biotechnology.
The Center has a state-of-the-art laboratory where young students can learn to use the equipment while interacting with scientists from Johns Hopkins University and from local companies and associations.
We are always looking to develop new partnerships. If you would like to partner with us to develop educational programming for the next generation of science and technology leaders, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
