Welcome from the Dean

Hello! My name is Sarah Steinberg and I am the associate dean for the Advanced Academic Programs of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. It is my pleasure to welcome you to our school and specifically to the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP).

First, I would like to describe our academic home. The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is the core institution of the Johns Hopkins University - a complex of schools, centers, and institutes. We are one of eight degree granting schools of the university which include, among others, medicine, public health, nursing, engineering, international studies, business/education and music. Today, more than 130 years after the founding of JHU, the Krieger School still follows the guiding principles of our first president, Daniel Coit Gilman. This adherence to his founding ideals does not reflect cautiousness or entrenchment on our part. Instead, we are guided to the forefront of knowledge development, where inquiry and research drive learning and instruction at our school.

In a very similar fashion, the Advanced Academic Programs are focused on providing the core academic ideals of excellence in instruction and service, but at AAP, we use delivery options such as convenient geographic locations, evening and weekend hours and online courses to provide options that are more targeted to adult learners such as yourself. Our students in AAP are interested in pursuing educational advancement at the graduate level while at the same time enjoying the flexibility of maintaining professional and personal objectives. So while studying with us at AAP, you will be able to explore theories and examine practical applications that provide personal enrichment and, at the same time, transfer directly into the workplace.

The continued growth and success of our programs is a real tribute to our outstanding core of research faculty and practitioners from Johns Hopkins University and from area private and government organizations. These individuals bring a very important balance of theory and practical experience to the classroom.

So whether you choose a face-to-face classroom experience at one of our three teaching locations at Dupont Circle in Washington, DC, at the Homewood Campus in Baltimore, or at the Montgomery County Campus in Rockville, Maryland, or you opt to participate in one of our many online courses, you will experience our commitment to offering the highest level of educational excellence. Please examine our website. You will find information that you need to help you get started with your academic experience in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. But at any time, please feel free to contact us directly for further information. Welcome to the Advanced Academic Programs .
