Getting Ready for Your First Semester
New Student Checklist
Whether you plan to take courses at our Washington DC campus, at the Homewood Campus, at the Montgomery County Campus, or online, please check that you have completed the following important steps.
Activate your Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory (JHED) log-in.
JHED is a university-wide online directory of students, staff, and faculty. New students need to locate and activate their Log in ID. The JHED ID and password gives admitted students access to a variety of JHU online resources, including online registration and online library services. For step-by-step instructions to activate your JHED Log in visit our tutorial below:
Set up your Johns Hopkins Enterprise Messaging (JHEM) e-mail.
All AAP students are required to activate their assigned JHEM or "JohnsHopkins.edu" email address. All official communications from AAP and Johns Hopkins University will be sent to this address, including, but not limited to, class assignments, billing information and emergency notifications. For step-by-step instructions to activate your JHEM email and to learn to forward your JHU email to another address, visit our tutorial.
Register for your first class. Please be sure to look at your academic program requirements on the program website before registering.
All students can register for Advanced Academic Programs courses conveniently online. For step-by-step instructions on registering for class, use the Registration Wizard. If you are a joint-degree student, you must register for courses offered outside of Advanced Academic Programs by using the registration form and faxing, mailing, or submitting it in person at our enrollment services office.
Make sure to review the academic calendar, which indicates registration dates, deadlines, semester start and end dates, and other useful calendar information. If you plan to take your first online course, you must first complete an online survey and pass a one-week orientation course. For information on online courses, please visit advanced.jhu.edu/online.
Look for your J-Card in the mail two to three weeks after your register for you first class. The J-Card is the University Identification card and also serves as a library card. Once you have received your J-Card, it must be activated in order to borrow library materials. Your library account is activated the first time you check an item out of one of the library centers. You can also activate your account by sending an email to washrocklibraries@jhu.edu or calling the main Circulation Desk at 410-516-8370. The 14 digit number on the very bottom of the card is the number you will need to provide. Once your account is activated, you can place online requests for library materials and have those materials delivered to the campus closest to you. NOTE: If you would like your J-Card to display your photo, you will need to have your photo taken for your J-Card at the Office ID Card services at Homewood Campus, Baltimore (a photo is not required). For more information about J-Card or replacing a lost/damaged J-Card, visit the ID Card Serivces website idcs.jhu.edu.
Visit the Library Website. To connect to library databases from home or from a remote computer, you will only need your JHED ID and password. An alternative method for connecting to resources is to use JHConnect. For instructions please visit the Library Services' instructions on connecting from off-campus.
Purchase your textbooks. Textbook information can be found at Advanced Academic Program's online bookstore, MBS Direct. The bookstore offers competitive pricing, new and used books, and buy backs from their large distribution center. Textbooks should be purchased and in hand prior to the first day of class, for both on-site and online courses.
Read the Code of Conduct, which includes a notice on plagiarism. Code of Conduct (PDF format)effective June 2007. All students are responsible for knowing and adhering to university policies. Additional policy information can be found at: advanced.jhu.edu/students/#policy.
