Welcome to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Advanced Academic Programs. The intent of this web based New Student Orientation is to welcome you to the AAP community and guide you through administrative steps that will enhance your experiences as an AAP student.

Getting Ready for Your First Semester

New Student Checklist

Whether you plan to take courses at our Washington DC campus, at the Homewood Campus, at the Montgomery County Campus, or online, please check that you have completed the following important steps.

  1. Activate your Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory (JHED) log-in.
    JHED is a university-wide online directory of students, staff, and faculty. New students need to locate and activate their Log in ID. The JHED ID and password gives admitted students access to a variety of JHU online resources, including online registration and online library services.   2. Set up your Johns Hopkins Enterprise Messaging (JHEM) e-mail.
    For step-by-step instructions to activate your JHEM email, visit our tutorial.
  3. Register for your first class. Please be sure to look at your academic program requirements on the program website before registering.
    New Students should register by downloading and fax in their registration forms. For step-by-step instructions to register for class, use the Registration Wizard. If you are not a joint degree student, after your first semester, you can also preregister for subsequent classes online using the registration wizard. The course schedules for the semester are located online at: advanced.jhu.edu/registration/schedules.Here you will also find the academic calendar which gives the registration dates, semester start and end dates, and other useful calendar information. If you plan to take your first online course, you must first complete an online survey and pass a one-week orientation course. For information on online courses, please visit advanced.jhu.edu/online.
  4. Look for your J-Card in the mail two to three weeks after your register for you first class.
    Picture of a student J-CARDThe J-Card is the University Identification card and also serves as a library card. Once you have received your J-Card, it must be activated in order to borrow library materials. Your library account is activated the first time you check an item out of one of the library centers. You can also activate your account by calling the main Circulation Desk at 410-516-8370. The 14 digit number on the very bottom of the card is the number to enter for online requests for library materials, once your card is activated. NOTE: If you would like your J-Card to display your photo, you will need to have your photo taken for your J-Card at the Office ID Card services at Homewood Campus, Baltimore (a photo is not required).   5. Download the JHSecure VPN Client: a Virtual Private Network
    To connect to library databases from home or from a remote computer, you will need to download this software VPN. For download instructions please visit Library Services' instructions on connecting from home or on the road.
  6. Purchase your textbooks.
    Textbooks can be purchased on-line or at the bookstore during operation hours. Where your course is located depends on where you will purchase your books. For all classes held at the Homewood Campus, textbooks are sold at the Barnes and Noble Book Center, located on 3330 St Paul Street (The corner of St. Paul and 33rd Street). Contact: 410-662-5850 or johns-hopkins.bkstore.com.For all classes held at the Montgomery County Campus or the Washington, D.C. center, and for all online classes, textbooks are sold by Reiter's Books.   7. Read the Code of Conduct, which includes a notice on plagiarism
    Code of Conduct (PDF format) effective June 2007. All students are responsible for knowing and adhering to university policies. Additional policy information can be found at: advanced.jhu.edu/students/#policy.
