Master's Degree Ceremony

Essential Information about the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Master's Degree Ceremony for Part-Time and Full-Time Degree Candidates

Date: Friday, May 22, 2009

Time: Candidates must report to the Goldfarb Gym in the Ralph S. O'Connor Recreation Center/Athletic Center by 8:30 a.m. for check-in and line-up. The Processional will begin promptly at 9:45 a.m.

Place: The ceremony will take place on Homewood Field of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , University Parkway , beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Ceremony: Students will be called to stage to shake hands with Deans, Chairs, and Associate Program Chairs.

Guest Speaker: The keynote speaker for the May 2009 Master's Degree ceremony is John Astin, actor, and visiting professor in the Writing Seminars in the Krieger School.

Webcast: Johns Hopkins University is providing a live webcast viewing of the School of Arts and Sciences Master's Degree Ceremony on Friday, May 22nd. To view the webcast, please visit http://jhu.edu/commencement/webcast/.

Reception: A reception for graduates, friends, and family will follow the ceremony in the Robert Scott Gymnasium of the Ralph S. O'Connor Recreation Center.

Driving Directions, Campus Map, and Parking: Download Driving/Parking Directions and a campus map. Handicapped parking is provided. Parking for the ceremony is permitted without charge.

Disability Access for Guests and Students: Accessible parking area and wheelchair access facilities are located on the commencement map. If you wish to drop off disabled guests before parking, please use this area. For other accommodations for disabilities, please contact 202-452-0983 or email dosullivan@jhu.edu.

Guests: Guests will be seated on the field on a first-come first-served basis. There is plenty of overflow seating in the stands. There is no maximum number of guests that a graduate can invite. Tickets are not needed for guests to attend the ceremony. Food and beverages are not permitted in the field.

Cap and Gowns: Caps and Gowns are mandatory. Students purchase their caps and gowns online or on the Homewood campus. Information about ordering caps and gowns is sent out to all graduates from the Registrar's office. The Master of Arts has a white hood. The Master of Science has a gold hood. Students in joint degree programs will select either  "Arts" or  "Sciences"  depending on their degree with Advanced Academic Programs when they place their orders.

Photographer: Photographers from GradTrak/Chappell Studio will be on stage to take pictures as you shake hands with the Dean of the Krieger School.  Diplomas: Diplomas will be mailed to all students. Students in joint degree programs receive one diploma indicating both degrees.  The Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences will confer degrees at the Master's Degree Ceremony. Degrees for students in joint programs will be conferred by representatives of both schools.

Diploma Frames: Frames can be ordered online at www.framingsuccess.com.

Class rings: Class rings can be ordered through http://www.balfour.com.

DVD/Vidoetape:  Northeast Photo Network, Inc.(1-800-929-7427)will provide a DVD or videotape of the ceremony. To order a copy, fill out this order form, and return directly to Northeast Photo Network. 

Inclement Weather Plan:
The ceremony is scheduled to take place rain or shine.The area is not covered: students and guests should dress appropriately for the weather. In the event of severe conditions where it becomes necessary to completely cancel the A&S Master's degree ceremony, an announcement will be made no later than 6:30 a.m. on the University Website http://webapps.jhu.edu/emergencynotices/ and on the Hopkins weather line (410-516-7781 or 1-800-548-9004). If the ceremony is in progress and is canceled or if the ceremony is canceled prior to the processional, students will be guided to the Robert Scott gym for the reception and will have the opportunity to shake hands and be photographed with the Dean of the Kreiger School.
