Online Survey

Hello, and welcome to online education with the Advanced Academic Programs!

Online education can transform the learning experience by promoting collaboration, critical thinking, and individual responsibility. Hopkins online courses require active participation with material and your colleague students throughout the week. You are in a partnership with your course and the other students.

The following survey can help you assess your level of preparedness.

  1. 1. Do You Have the Time? Online learning in the Advanced Academic Programs demands 12 - 20 focused hours per week, depending on the course and your initial level of knowledge and ability. Most instructors require participation in the online classroom at least three times per week; participation is based on current reading and research assignments.
  2. 2. Do You Have the Motivation and Ability to Work Independently? Online courses are hard work. Successful distance learning students have a passion for learning and a willingness to excel. They enjoy collaborating and take responsibility for their role in the educational process.
  3. 3. Do You Have Your Own Computer? Because lectures, assignments, library resources, group projects, and ongoing topic discussions are contained in your online classroom, and are updated frequently, you must have full access to a home computer to participate in an online course.
  4. 4. Do You Have Access to Download Software on Your Computer? You must have administrative privileges to your computer, or there must be someone able and willing to allow/process downloads of safe third party software such as RealPlayer, Adobe Reader, and Flash Player. You also need to have working speakers in order to use some of these multimedia applications or software.
  5. 5. Do You Have Your Own Internet Service Provider (internet access)? To participate in Advanced Academic Programs online courses, you must have your own, reliable Internet Service Provider (ISP). AOL is not recommended because students have experienced "disconnects" from the courseware.
  6. 6. Does Your Computer Meet the Technical Requirements? We require students with Windows-based computers to have Windows XP or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2. Mac users must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later (10.3 or later recommended). Older operating systems may not support the web browsers and other software necessary for your participation in an online course. We also require students to have a microphone and speakers.
  7. 7. Can You Take A Week for an Orientation? Except for students who have already taken an Advanced Academic Programs online course, all students are required to take a one-week online orientation course which is offered and graded before the beginning of the regular semester. This course is in the same format as that of the regular courses. Participation is mandatory. Students should plan to log in and participate on the first day, and on at least two additional days during the week. An approximate time for completion is 10 to 15 hours. Tutorials, discussions, and online assignments are part of this introductory week's coursework. Students are expected to complete this week successfully so that they can participate fully in their graduate online course.
