I’d like to welcome you to the site for the Applied Economics Master’s Degree Program of Johns Hopkins University. We hope these pages will give you a sense of the focus of the program, the skills that are developed, and how they can enhance your career progression.
The central role of economics in business and government is as old as civilization, but the relative importance of economics has been growing in recent decades as governments have expanded economic freedoms, and globalization has connected more markets. At the same time, the skills required to perform frontier economic analysis have become more sophisticated. Advanced economic modeling, forecasting, analysis of rapidly incoming data, and econometrics, have become the backbone of decisions made in governments, international organizations, and businesses.
Whether you are now working, for a US government agency, on Capitol Hill, for a consulting firm, or for a private or public financial institution, you know that these skills enable professional advancement, and allow greater professional responsibility and flexibility. In our courses you will interact with students from diverse backgrounds, and be taught almost exclusively by professional PhD economists working at such institutions, and gain a greater understanding of the field. Through the program, students become strong economists, with the applicable skills and perspective most in demand in today’s economy.
As you consider continuing your economics education, I encourage you to peruse our Web site and, if you have any questions about the program, or about economics education in general, to call the Program Director for Applied Economics, Frank D. Weiss, or the Associate Director, Ahmed Mahmud. Dr. Weiss can be reached by phone at (202) 452-0769 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, and Dr. Mahmud can be reached by phone at (202) 663-5983 or by e-mail at email@example.com. We would be delighted to help you in the next phase of your education.
