Program Chair

Steven David is the Director of the Certificate Program in National Security Studies and Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins University. His scholarly focus is on security issues arising from the developing world, with a special emphasis on the Middle East. He is now finishing his third book, this one on the implications for American security of civil conflict in keys states. He has published a wide range of articles appearing in such publications as World Politics, Foreign Affairs, International Security, The National Interest and Ethics and International Affairs. He teaches several courses, including Political Violence, National Security in the Nuclear Age, The Causes of Peace, and Internal War. He is also Vice Dean for Centers and Programs at Johns Hopkins University.

Associate Program Chairs

Ariel Roth is the associate director of the graduate Certificate Program in National Securities Studies. A veteran of the Israeli military and a graduate of the Hebrew University, Dr. Roth earned his doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University in international relations. Dr. Roth's specialties include strategic studies and international relations theory and he regularly teaches courses in Military Strategy and Modern War for the Government program at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Roth's has published in both professional academic journals as well as providing occasional commentary on foreign policy and security related topics for both national and international newspapers. Faculty Members

Alistair Millar is Co-Director of the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation, a nonpartisan research and policy institute that works to improve coordination of the international community's response to terrorism. Since 2000 Millar has also taught at George Washington University. He has written numerous chapters, articles, and reports on international counterterrorism efforts, sanctions regimes, and nonproliferation. He is author, with Eric Rosand, of Allied Against Terrorism: What’s Needed to Strengthen Worldwide Commitment (2006). Millar has an MA from the University of Leeds (UK) and is a PhD candidate at the University of Bradford (UK).
