JHU-FEI Leadership in Government Fellows

At a minimum, leadership consists of skills, character, and knowledge. The Leadership in Government Fellows Program is focused on broadening the knowledge bases of current and rising public sector leaders. Government executives who have successfully completed the Leadership for a Democratic Society (LDS) Program of the Federal Executive Institute (FEI) are eligible to apply as a JHU-FEI Leadership in Government Fellow to the M.A. in Government Program at Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

FEI graduates of the LDS Program who meet the admissions requirements for the master’s degree in Government at Johns Hopkins will be allowed to transfer eight FEI (American Council on Education approved) credit hours toward the MA degree. JHU-FEI Leadership in Government Fellows will complete their Hopkins M.A. in Government degree in a special nine course format. Fellows will take a special Leadership In Government seminar which will allow them to build on their LDS final projects and development plans. Additional courses with a leadership focus that are offered include: Negotiating as a Leadership Skill, Leadership Skills for the 21st Century, Leadership and Entrepreneurship in Politics, and Executive Politics and Policymaking. FEI-JHU Leadership in Government Fellows will be well positioned to advance their public sector careers.

The LDS Program at FEI focuses on building leadership skills for senior government executives. Grounded heavily in concepts of public service, LDS helps each participant assess his/her personal leadership values and strengths, explore strategies for leading change, more fully understand policy in a complex constitutional system, and build awareness of the broader global context in which they must lead. The program culminates with the development of a “Leadership Challenge” to take back to the participants home agency and a Personal Development Plan which outlines a path for continued leadership learning.

At Johns Hopkins, the M.A. in Government Program brings together the theory and practice of government, politics, and policymaking. Students gain the knowledge and expertise necessary for their own leadership in politics and administration. All of the courses are held in the evening in Washington, D.C. (Dupont Circle). They are taught by current government leaders and nationally and internationally recognized leaders in the practice or study of American politics. About one-third of the Program’s professors are full-time JHU faculty members. JHU graduates of the M.A. in Government Program are typically in leadership positions within agencies and include high-level political appointees.

The Hopkins MA/MBA Program in Government - a joint degree between the Government program and the Carey School of Business - prepares managers to move between the public and private sectors, or work for agencies that span the two. The MA/MBA combines the public sector management strengths of the Hopkins MA in Government with the private sector business savvy of the Hopkins MBA.
