Course Requirements

CURRICULUM FOR THE MA COMMUNICATION/MBA JOINT DEGREE

Students enrolled in the joint degree are required to take eight courses in the Communication program Students enrolled prior to summer 2010 may follow this curriculum or follow the requirements on the old course requirements page. Communication

All MA/MBA students are required to complete the following communication courses:

  1. Research and Writing Methods (480.600)
    [This is the first class students take in the Communication department]
  2. One courses from the Informing Practice Through Research Group
  3. A second course from the Informing Practice Through Research Group
  4. One course from the Applied Research for Communication Professionals Group
  5. Elective #1
  6. Elective #2
  7. Elective #3
  8. Thesis (480.800)
    [All students must complete a thesis. This is the last class in the Communication department. Graduation is subject to completion of the thesis course and approval of the thesis by the thesis committee. Students who do not finish their theses in one semester must register for Thesis Continuation for every subsequent semester (including summer) until the thesis is accepted. Students may not take a leave of absence while on thesis continuation.]

Students may select from the following concentrations: Corporate and Non-Profit Communication, Public and Media Relations, Health Communication, Political Communication, and Digital Technologies. A concentration is not required. To earn a concentration, students must take three classes in that subject area. Concentrations are not currently available for students taking courses solely online.

Students enrolled in the MA/MBA duel degree must take all eight of their communication courses in the Communication department. Out of department enrollment is not allowed. Provisional students are not allowed to take online courses in the Communication department. Students who earn a C or below in a core or required course may not count that course toward core requirements. Students using quantitative methods in their theses must take 480.608. Students using qualitative methods in their theses must take 480.609.
