FAQ
1. How many courses are required? A total of eleven (11) courses will be required. You will take one biotechnology elective and one computer science elective within the eleven (11) courses. Of course you can take additional graduate courses in either biotechnology or computer science to expand your knowledge. 2. How long will it take to complete the program? This program is designed to be taken on a part-time basis. If you take two courses in each semester (fall, spring, and summer), you will complete the program in two years. You must complete your degree requirements within five years. 3. Can I accelerate the program? You may accelerate the program to meet your needs. 4. Where will classes be held? Classes can be taken at JHU’s Montgomery Campus in Rockville, MD, Applied Physics Lab (APL) in Columbia, MD, Homewood Campus in Baltimore and online. Some bioinformatics classes will only be offered at certain locations. 5. Will there be online courses? Some of the required courses for this program are offered online including 410.602 Advanced Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 410.633 Computers in Molecular Biology, 605.752 Simulation of Biological and Complex Systems, and 605.754 Analysis of Gene Expression. In addition, several of the electives in biotechnology and computer science are available online. Several other courses are in development. 6. As a MS in Biotechnology student, can I transfer to this program? You must apply separately for the MS in Bioinformatics. The following courses will count toward the MS in Bioinformatics: 410.602 Advanced Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology In addition, you may transfer one more course from the list of biotechnology electives. 7. As a MS in Computers Science student, can I transfer to this program? You must apply separately for the MS in Bioinformatics. The following courses will count toward the MS in Bioinformatics: 605.421 Foundations of Algorithms In addition, you may transfer one more course from the list of computer science electives. 8. Can I apply any of the courses from the MS in Computer Science to this degree? You may apply three relevant courses from your MS in Computer Science to the MS in Bioinformatics, so you need to take 8 courses to complete the MS in Bioinformatics or a total of 18 courses for both degrees. Please note: We do not accept transfer credits from other universities. 9. Can I apply any of the courses from the MS in Biotechnology to this degree? You may apply three relevant courses from your MS in Biotechnology to the MS in Bioinformatics, so you need to take 8 courses to complete the MS in Bioinformatics or a total of 18 courses for both degrees. Please note: We do not accept transfer credits from other universities. 10. Am I required to take the GRE or the TOEFL? The GRE is NOT required. If you obtained your degree(s) from a college or a university in a country where the language is not English, you must submit TOEFL scores along with you application. 11. What is tuition for this program? Tuition for the 2004-2005 Academic Year for courses offered in the program by the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences will be $2075 per course. Am I eligible for financial aid if I am enrolled in this program? The Krieger School of Arts &
