4th Annual Research Symposium

4th Annual Biotechnology Symposium - audience listening intently to speakerThe Advanced Biotechnology Studies program was pleased to hold its 4th Annual Research Symposium on May 14th, 2009. The event proved extremely successful and was attended by over one hundred interested participants. 

Colonel John Skvorak, Commander, USAMRID, Fort Detrick was the guest speaker and gave a very informative talk on “Current Topics in Medical Biodefense Research” Col. Skvorak holds a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine. Colonel Skvorak heads an institution with state-of-the-art biocontainment facilities. Investigators at its facilities frequently collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and major biomedical and academic centers worldwide.

4th Annual Biotechnology Symposium - attendees reading infectious diseases informationAfter the pre-presentation reception, attendees had the opportunity to view a student research poster session.  Participants in the poster session included NCI fellows in the Molecular Targets and Drug Discovery Technologies concentration, a USAMRIID fellow in the Biodefense concentration, and students who have completed research projects in bioscience and bioinformatics as part of their degree requirements for the Master of Science in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics degrees, and our MS/MBA students who competed in the Kellogg Biotech & Healthcare Case Competition this year.
