Chris Given, Adjunct Faculty
Chris is a DC-based information designer and technologist who works to make data accessible and useful to all. He works with the US Digital Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs, working to better the experience of veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services. Prior to that, Chris served as a civic technologist with the DC government’s Technology Innovation Program, where a key accomplishment was the drafting of a city open data policy. He made his first forays into producing accessible data visualizations in the education sector, partnering with clients including state education agencies, foundations, and nonprofits to make education data useful for parents, teachers, school leaders, and policymakers. His work won the 2014 My School Information Design Challenge, organized by the Foundation for Excellence in Education. By night, he is a civic hacker with the volunteer organizations Code for DC and DataKind DC, where he has led projects on topics including education, transportation, poverty, government spending, and elections.
