Bertrand Garcia-Moreno is the Chair. He is also Chair of the Department of Biophysics in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Hopkins. He joined the Department of Biophysics more than 20 years ago, after postdoctoral studies in the Department of Biology also at Hopkins.
Dr. Garcia-Moreno received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Bowdoin College in Maine, and his Ph. D. in Chemistry from Indiana University in Bloomington. His expertise is in the physical chemistry of biological macromolecules, with special emphasis on proteins. His research is focused on experimental and computational studies of the relationship between structure and energy in proteins, with special interest on the electrostatic forces that determine the salt and pH sensitivity of macromolecules and in fundamental processes for biological energy transduction. He is also involved in protein engineering research and in studies of regulatory interactions in viral capsids and other macromolecular assemblies. Besides teaching and research, Dr. Garcia-Moreno is also active in various editorial boards, most notably of the journal Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, where he has served as Editor-in-Chief for over five years.
