Adam Burns, Adjunct Faculty

Adam Burns, MPP, is the COO/CSO of Edge Research, a market research firm in Northern Virginia. He oversees team operations and ensures that the research teams work as efficiently and effectively as possible. He also cultivates Edge’s efforts in communications research and social marketing.

Prior to joining Edge, Burns served as Senior Vice President in the Strategic Planning & Research group at Porter Novelli. There, he led primary research efforts for clients in the for-profit, nonprofit, and government sectors, with a specific expertise in social marketing.

Burns has built an extensive resume of providing strategic guidance for many clients including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, P&G, HP, the IRS, National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Specifically, his work informed the development of (both child and adult versions) and the 2009 and 2010 Medicare Open Enrollment campaigns.

He has spoken at many conferences and has published articles in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior and O’Dwyer’s PR Report to name a few. Prior to joining Porter Novelli, he served as Research Director at Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU), a leading consulting firm specializing in teens and young adults, where he coordinated projects for clients such as Sony, MasterCard, and truth®. Burns received a graduate degree from the Georgetown Public Policy Institute and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He has taught Applied Qualitative Research but currently teaches Understanding Markets and Audiences. In Fall 2012, he won the Excellence in Teaching Award for this course.
